How I Lost You Janet Gurtler Books
Such a good book! I wish it would just keep going. Actually, I really would have liked to see which girl made the Grinders. That's the only reason it didn't get a 5. However, very heart warming and great details. Author did a great job displaying the characters emotions. You felt like you were the character. Great novel for 14-18 category.Tags : Amazon.com: How I Lost You (0760789240560): Janet Gurtler: Books,Janet Gurtler,How I Lost You,Sourcebooks Fire,1402277946,Social Themes - General,Best friends,Best friends;Fiction.,Dating (Social customs),Emotional problems;Fiction.,Friendship,Friendship;Fiction.,Children: Young Adult (Gr. 7-9),Emotional problems,Fiction,General fiction (Children's Teenage),Social Themes - Dating & Relationships,Social Themes - Friendship,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Social Themes General (see also headings under Family),Young Adult Fiction,Young Adult Fiction Coming of Age,Young Adult Fiction Romance General,Young Adult Fiction Social Themes Friendship,Young Adult FictionComing of Age,Young Adult FictionRomance - General
How I Lost You Janet Gurtler Books Reviews
What impressed me the most about HOW I LOST YOU was the way Janet Gurtler dealt with losing a best friend. She mentioned once that when you lose a best friend, you experience the same emotions that come from breaking up with a significant other. They've been there for you through thick and thin, and letting go is hard. We've all experienced it. It's always painful, especially when you truly love your friend. Whether you're on the receiving end or the one severing the cord, losing a good friend sucks. Sometimes, you have no choice. When friends become toxic and destroy your own life, it's time to let go...but that doesn't mean the break won't be painful!
HOW I LOST YOU centers around best friends Grace and Kya. They're always together, and even play paintball together, two fierce girls able to dominate in a male-oriented sport. Grace knows exactly what she wants when she graduates to play paintball in college with The Grinders, an all-female team. There will be two open spots, and she knows they're meant for her and Kya. Kya, however, is growing more irresponsible due to turmoil that rises in her life, and the team may no longer be willing to take a chance on either girl. Can Grace stop Kya's destructive behavior before it's to late to fix things?
There are so many deep, heavy issues lying at HOW I LOST YOU's heart. Even minor things stand out and become memorable. For example, it was intriguing to see a minor character with MS, and the way the disease impacts the life of the woman's son, James, the third amigo who cuts Kya off long before Grace has the heart to even consider it. While there is a little romance mixed into the novel, it's never the focus. Instead, everything centers around the friendship between Grace and Kya. I really appreciated the way Gurtler chose not to overpower the book with an obligatory romance, but rather highlight a different sort of love, one able to equally resonate with readers. Grace wants nothing more than to believe the best of Kya and to support her in every way she can. She knows where Kya is coming from and is the keeper of Kya's deepest, darkest secret. She hates the way Kya's always so needy, though, the way Kya won't put Grace's needs ahead of her own. It's always Grace giving; she never gains. The girls have cute little mannerisms such as the "Butt Dance" whenever Grace says "But," though they also have unfortunate nicknames for one another that can, at times, be distracting. At first, it seems that Grace is fine with this, but as the novel progresses, we see just how deeply Kya can hurt her, and just how much leeway Grace has given her to do so over the years. In a way, even these minor annoyances become important.
And the paintball! I had so much fun reading about the sport through Grace's eyes. It's not something I've ever played or really thought twice about, but Gurtler brought it to life. The tension, the drama, the action. There were so many great moments, and paintball became a major character in its own right over the course of the book. I had no clue there were professional college teams, and feel I learned so much! The way Gurtler introduced me to a new sport and invited me to care reminds me of the way Miranda Kenneally is always able to do the same thing through her excellent novels. Both authors have a lot of heart and aren't afraid to shy away from tough topics. I'm glad to see so many brave authors in contemporary YA right now!
This turned out to be an OK book for me, a sort of 3 and 1/2 stars.
Buds Before Studs. Sisters Before Misters.
How many of us when younger thought we could live by those promises?
The thing is, as we get older, as we learn along the way and life experiences, they can change us, OK we are still 'us' but we may not have the same things in common any more or realise that we do want our boyfriend before the friendship, who knows.,
The book was well written and I did enjoy it on certain levels, its a book that is a light read for me in between heavier books.
Thought provoking for the young 'uns I would say,.

I really enjoy Janet Gurtler's novels, and I think How I Lost You was my favorite one of her books so far! Janet Gurtler's writing reads really quickly, and her books are always a great balance of entertaining and thought-provoking. How I Lost You was no exception - I loved it!
Very few YA books focus on a platonic relationship rather than a romantic one, so I really appreciated that Janet Gurtler took on the topic of friendship in this novel. Grace's and Kya's relationship is fascinating. Grace's character is easy to like and relate to, especially in her conflicting feelings towards Kya. Kya's character is even more interesting to me yes, she seems like a horrible person at times, and she does make some horrible decisions, but I also understood her and felt for her, and saw the darker parts of myself in her. I don't want to spoil anything and give away Kya's secret, but what she's been through and the way it's still affecting her is an issue that I really liked seeing explored in YA literature. Kya fascinated me so much that I kind of wish that this book had been written in alternating voices so that we could have gotten to see both Grace's and Kya's point of view. But even just from Grace's view, the way that Kya's mistakes shift the dynamics in her friendship is interesting to read about, and I love the way that Janet Gurtler explored the complexities of such a destructive friendship.
Even if friendship is the main focus of the novel, How I Lost You has a really good romantic storyline as well. Grace's relationship with Levi is slow-moving and sweet, and provides a stark contrast to Kya's love life. I really enjoyed seeing their relationship develop over the course of the novel. At first, I was afraid there would be some kind of romantic interest between Grace and James, and I'm glad the story took the direction that it did instead.
Another aspect I really enjoyed about this story is the paintballing. Grace's dad owns a paintball place, where both Grace and Kya work and play. They're even trying to make it to a college or professional paintballing team! I really liked reading about this creative interest for Grace. I especially liked seeing Grace and Kya try to succeed in such a male-dominated area. I wish, though, that the feminist theme prevalent throughout the paintball scenes, had carried over to the rest of the story, especially Kya's issues and behavior, a little stronger.
With great writing and intriguing characters, I absolutely loved this thought-provoking story. I can't wait to read 16 Things I Thought Were True, Janet Gurtler's next novel!
I feel like she could obsolete another chapter like a summary. She left it up to interpretation like who won the game or what happened at the dinner or if Grace went to the Grinders. However I still wanted those loose ends to tie up.
This book was well written and kept my interest all the way through. I like books that do that so if you want a good read go ahead and buy this one.
I truly enjoyed reading this book. Although I would have liked a longer ending, I was happy with how it went.
