After finishing the first two books of the Windrose Chronicles, I was quite satisfied. There had been a long and convoluted journey to a satisfying and sufficiently complicated and convincing conclusion. How could it get better? I had no expectations of Dog Wizard. I picked it up expecting that it would, at best, be icing on the cake. But instead, it seems that it may ultimately be the very best piece in this excellent trilogy! It fills in many gaps in the history of the enigmatic and quirky Antryg Windrose, demonstrates again his incredible strength of mind and determination, and yet leaves Joanna enough room for quiet heroism of her own.
Many of the Council wizards that were relatively simple sketches of a character in the earlier books become fascinating and fully-fleshed movers of the plot. And what a plot! The kidnap! The second kidnap, and torturous enslavement of the sensitive wizard! The planning between the wizard and the alien friend whose life he had saved, and who had saved his life in turn already... And more, and more.
I love this book! I can already see that it will need to be re-read. Perhaps more than once...

Dog Wizard Windrose Chronicles #3 Barbara Hambly 9780345377142 Books Reviews
I could read this series over and over and over! These characters are so believable one finds oneself literally rooting for Antryg and Joanna even though it's just magical fiction! The e conversion format left something to be desired grammatically as there were grammatical errors everywhere (especially the continual use of the word "the" in place of the word "me") but still, I was saddened to see the book end. My fondest hope is that Barbara Hambly revisits the world of Ferryth with Antryg and Joanna with at least another enthralling trilogy!
The conversion of this book to an ebook was awful. Every page has a typo - usually two words run together without a space. But the worst was that every instance of the word "me" in the text was changed to "the". I can see how that would happen once when converting ascanned paper book to a digital file, but every time? The digital publisher did not proof-read this at all! Check the reviews before buying any digital book from Open Road Multimedia.
What can I say? I love stories about struggles against the unjust fates. And if anyone is deserving of a second chance it's Andryg the poor wizard 'adopted' at a tender age by an insane, power hungry wizard. He gets shut of it and is on Earth with his lover and though he can't do magic anymore he is carving out an existence. Then the Council gets it in their head he's the cause of their idiocy and kidnap the sweet helpless little girl. Got news for you, guys. Get her over the heebee jeebies and you got one ticked off chick. Team her up with a sweetly crazy wizard and the disasters certainly begin to roll. I love this couple, and wouldn't mind seeing more of them--except that would mean no one's left them alone which I would hate. Highly recommended
This was an enjoyable 3rd book in this series and I would certainly recommend it to fantasy fans. The problem is with the E book formatting. I really think should refund or give credit to anyone who buys a book from them thinking that all the words will be correct as in the original book. It is tiresome to have to guess what word the author meant. Also It would be nice if there was a separation between events to let you know that there is a big scene change. I'll start a new paragraph and the story jumps to another place and with different characters. So really Barbara gets a "5" and gets a "-1". I have had this problem with other books too, but this was the worse. AMAZON PLEASE CLEAN UP YOUR ACT! Maybe I should try the Nook or i-pad?
Premise Sequel to The Silent Tower and Silicon Mage. Joanna again returns to Antryg's home dimension, but not willingly this time. Antryg follows in search of her, but he finds his former colleagues are less concerned with the fact that he'd escaped his death sentence than with who or what is causing severe disturbances in the Void. Disturbances that threaten to unhinge the world of magic, and trap both Antryg and Joanna between dimensions.
This book is set about 6 months after Silicon Mage, but the publication dates are five years apart. As such, Dog Wizard is less "Part Three" and more "the continuing adventures of." Some characters recur, but the tone and the emphasis is a bit different, and the plot is relatively unconnected to the previous books.
It was a pretty fun book, though. This book spent much more time with Antryg, getting into his head, where the previous ones mostly focused on Joanna. There was a lot more about magicians and their private culture and interactions. They hold themselves somewhat separate from the world, but are always actually interacting with locals and in danger from authorities. It felt a lot like the community in some liberal arts colleges I know, both for good and for ill.
I was surprised to see the return of one character in particular, but happy. The multiverse implied by this series doesn't get a lot of play, otherwise.
The solution to the mystery was satisfying and sad, and while I saw one of the final twists coming, I still enjoyed it when it landed. It does rather beg for another sequel, but other than a stand-alone book in the same world and a handful of priced-just-too-high-for-a-short-story offerings on the author's website, this is the end of the story for now.
Similar to the other offerings by Open Road Media, this book had terrible OCR translation. It wasn't unreadable by any means, and it didn't have the section break problem that plagued Silicon Mage, but it confuses "the" and "me" a lot. So. My advice only buy the /etc. version on a very cheap sale, or if you've got room, check it out in paperback.
