FAUST IDER TRAGODIE ERSTER TE Johann Wolfgang Goethe 9783150000014 Books

Goethe began FAUST during his Sturm und Drang period. Part One was completed in 1808, and he worked on Part Two until the end of his life. The influence of Shakespeare is pervasive- aspects of Hamlet, Macbeth, and the Midsummer Night's Dream have gone into the dramatization of this Gothic legend- the scholar who sold his soul in his quest for experience.

And it should be said, first of all, that this is a dramatic poem. Only a dramatic genius could give both Faust and Mephistopheles, as well as Gretchen and God Almighty, the Poet, the Theater Manager, and the Clown perfect expression:

Drum seid nur brav und zeigt euch musterhaft,
Laßt Phantasie, mit allen ihren Chören,
Vernunft, Verstand, Empfindung, Leidenschaft,
Doch, merkt euch wohl! nicht ohne Narrheit hören.
DIREKTOR: Besonders aber laßt genug geschehn!
Man kommt zu schaun, man will am liebsten sehn

Or how about this point-counterpoint: Is it worse to be forever wandering, "rastlos" like Faust, or stuck ("umfangen") like Gretchen with nowhere to go?

And yes, the play is funny as well as tragic. Here is the Devil getting fed up with the goings on at the witches' sabbath:

... Nur fest an mir! sonst sind wir gleich getrennt. Wo bist du?
FAUST (in der Ferne): Hier!
MEPHISTOPHELES: Was! dort schon hingerissen?
Da werd ich Hausrecht brauchen müssen.
Platz! Junker Voland kommt. Platz! süßer Pöbel, Platz!
Hier, Doktor, fasse mich! und nun in einem Satz
Laß uns aus dem Gedräng entweichen;
Es ist zu toll, sogar für meinesgleichen.

NOTE: The best edition for help with the German is Walter Kaufmann's: Goethe's Faust

FAUST IDER TRAGODIE ERSTER TE Johann Wolfgang Goethe 9783150000014 Books Reviews

Ist außer Konkurrenz.
The book is magnificent, but what drives me batty is dealing with the control we give up over our lives with these technologies. randomly decided, or at least decided for no reason known to me, that I could not download this on my kindle App, but only on the kindle cloud reader. I wanted it on the reader so I could use the German-English dictionary.

I have to say, the handing over of our lives to the randomness of tehcnology doesn't make sense to me. I appreciate the benefits, but nothing is worth losing control over your own decisions.
handy worldwide due to kindle - always need to refresh on certain passages anytime
Everyone who is capable of reading and understanding the German language should read this book. It's Goethes Masterpiece and every one with a love for poetry will adore this. In addition, the play is about one of the most classical subjects of mankind, the urge to find those inner secrets of the world, to understand it and to lose every passion for life over it...
A must read in the original. One of the great classics of world literature which loses a lot in its translation into other languages. If you can handle German it is a must read in that language. Simply superb !
The book is so German in so many ways from the darkness of the actions to the eternal jammering about making in life of Faust. It reads quick for old German poetry and is generally a fun romp of a story.
What can I say. This is one of the greatest works of world literature, and for those who are able, it is best to read it in the original German. For those who do not read German but are fans of great literature, I would suggest reading at least part one in an English translation.
