Emma Jensen is pulling a scam. Desperate for money, she poses as Lady Denmore. Because Lord Denmore was known as a recluse, no one questions her identity when she arrives in London, gambling with the local gentry. Emma's behavior is seen as eccentric and harmless and the local noblemen humor the young widow, excusing her outrageous behavior on being recently widowed. Then enters Duke of Somerhart, or Hart, a man from her past, only he doesn't know it. When he starts meddling in her affairs, it could possibly threaten everything that Emma is working hard for. All the while Emma must stay one step ahead of the past she left behind.A Rake's Guide to Pleasure is a cute romantic story. Emma is a woman with spunk and determination. She has goals and nothing will stand in her way. She has no regret posing as someone she's not. In her mind, she's not stealing from the noblemen; she is winning the money fair and square. I thought that her goading the men into gambling or betting on games of chance were cute and funny. When Hart enters the picture, I knew that Emma had met her match. Emma constantly frustrated Hart and left him flustered. Their romance was gradual and sweet. I wouldn't call it a hot relationship despite Hart's past as a rake. He was quite gentle with her.
A Rake's Guide to Pleasure is a nice, romantic story that at times was humorous and sweet. The attraction was gradual but the sex wasn't too steamy even for this supposed rake. There were moments of steaminess but not enough in my opinion. Hart defies his reputation as a rake and is the hero that rescues the damsel in distress. But like most heroines with spunk and spine, Emma doesn't want to be rescued. Even when he perceives Emma's betrayal, he can't help but come to her aid.

A Rake Guide To Pleasure Zebra Historical Romance Victoria Dahl 9781420100167 Books Reviews
True, it's a Regency era romance, but the heroine has a different story than most. I found twists in the plot that were unexpected. I keep two boxes for books I've read - one for keepers and one for giveaways. This one I'll keep and read again.
it won't be a keeper for me. There were a lot of good things about this book, most notably Hart. I loved him. He was your typical tortured rake and he was up to the challenge of holding his own in this book. My problem was with Emma. She had way to much emotional baggage for me. It wasn't too bad at the beginning and I was sailing through the book when it got too dark for me. Some of Emma's actions directed toward Hart felt downright mean to me. She just seemed so hard-hearted. And she remained that way right to the end. I think there is trouble ahead for this pair because of her past.
There were things about the book I liked. As mentioned, Hart was a keeper. I liked Emma's interactions with Lancaster. And Stimp is a hero in the making. But, Emma ultimately weighed this book down for me. I gave it 4 stars, but what could have been a keeper, left me with a sad feeling after I had read it.
STORY BRIEF
Emily's family has died. She has no money, so she pretends to be a titled widow so she can attend London parties and gamble with men. She is a skilled gambler and plans to earn enough money so she can support herself with the interest income without getting married. Hart is a Duke planning never to marry. He sees Emily gambling and is attracted to her. She doesn't want a relationship and is planning on leaving within about a month. Her fear is that someone may find out that she is not who she says she is.
REVIEWER'S OPINION
I like strong, independent, smart women, and I enjoyed the way Emily bested men at gambling. But for some reason I did not enjoy the rest of the story around her. I did not like some of her choices. In addition, she must lie throughout the book to keep her secret, but even in the end, she continues lying - to herself and to Hart. Hart realizes this and knows he just needs to see through her to the truth and pay no attention to her words. It was ok as a typical romance novel, but it didn't hold my interest as well as other books have. I wasn't surprised or delighted, and a couple of times, I wanted it to be over.

Though a new reader to Ms Dahl's historicals, I was blown away with the intense sexual tension in this story. The conflict was equally intense and satisfying, the h/h had tortured pasts and the antagonist was very strange. I like how she kept much of the heroine's story from the reader as she built the tension. The heroine was so different than the typical one of this period and the reader feels a real kinship with her. And to top that Ms Dahl gives her a deliciously sexy hero, and her intimate scenes are a cut above typical romance. She creates a wonderful buddy for the heroine who appears to be getting his own book next.
The story was an exceptional find and I hope we hear more from this talented author. But her publisher needs to let her have more pages, this one was under 300. With such a unique voice she needs to be given more pages to create really fullbodied romances to flesh out the conflict. This one ended rather abrubtly and this reader didn't want to let these characters go.
